In the Classroom

In the schools with students and teachers

One of the most exciting moments of the Austin Jazz Workshop project occurs when the musician enters the music classroom. In this more intimate setting, children have an opportunity to ask questions and witness firsthand the joy and dedication a professional brings to jazz performance. They are also encouraged to become active participants in the process of music-making themselves through participation in school band, orchestra, or choir programs.

Workshop curriculum changes from season to season, and is designed to complement the assembly performance by presenting historical context and musical terminology for the season's focus. Past activities have included:

  • Composing original lyrics to Cole Porter's Friendship
  • Clapping exercises to demonstrate polyrhythms in jazz
  • Hands-on activities, such as playing the drums or blowing into a flute headjoint or trumpet mouthpiece
  • Joining in a second-line parade behind musicians staging a New Orleans jazz funeral
  • Being drafted into an impromptu maraca chorus to accompany the bossa novas of Antonio Carlos Jobim
